Terry Willey and Carol Baker presented ADDING HUMOR TO YOUR WRITING: Finding Your Funny at the January 3rd, 2026, meeting of the Coastal Dunes Branch of the California Writers Club.

We explored how humor expands character, enlivens dialogue, and transforms storytelling across genres. From Shakespeare to Seinfeld, we discussed joke formats and comic archetypes.  There was also a writing exercise designed to help participants find their own comedic voice.

We’ve been bringing wit and imagination to stage, screen, and page for many years.  In Bakersfield, we wrote original plays, murder mysteries, a musical comedy, and an audience‑participation country wedding gone wrong.  Our work includes eight one-acts, four murder mysteries, a staged readers’ theatre version of Seinfeld’s final episode (the one that should have happened), and half of a Christmas melodrama.

Terry has over 40 years of experience as a mental health therapist and five years of improv with ComedySportz.  Carol’s love of satire and footnotes give depth and sparkle to our collaborations.

Our film work includes two short films, a full-length feature, and an industrial film.  We’ve written humorous scripts and parodies that earned prizes, as well as teleplays that found success in national contests.

Our short stories appear in five anthologies.  Our novels always incorporate humor:  Time Travel for Fun and Prophet (2023), a sci-fi comedy about time travelers; and Rio Cyborg (2025), a sci-fi/western infused with comic characters.  Both books are available through your favorite bookstore and on Amazon.

The December meeting of the Coastal Dunes Branch of the California Writers Club was a memorable day of creativity and community.  We were thrilled to share our award‑winning short story, “Unauthorized Settlers,” with fellow writers.

We also offered a selection from our ongoing sci‑fi western novel worldbuilding project—a unique blend of frontier grit and futuristic imaginings set on a terraformed planet.  The excerpts sparked conversations about genre‑blending storytelling and visualizing new worlds.

We’re grateful to everyone who shared their work at the meeting.  Events like these remind us why writing matters:  stories connect us and inspire us to keep creating.

I’m pleased to announce my short story, Unauthorized Settlers, won Third Prize in the Coastal Dunes 2025 Flash Fiction Contest.

The official announcement of contest winners took place at the Coastal Dunes CWC October 4^thmeeting during the California Writers Week celebration at the Santa Maria Library.  Each contest winner received a Certificate of Achievement.

During the open mike portion of the event, we had the opportunity to read our winning stories.  This was a wonderful occasion to share our art with the audience.

Unauthorized Settlers is from the worldbuilding project The Copperbank Compendium:  A History Of Blanken 9. This is a fictional historical account of the early days of terraforming the planet Blanken 9 for colonization created for my upcoming sci-fi western novel, Rio Cyborg.

Kudos: Flash Fiction Contest Winners - Coastal Dunes CWC

After decades of planning, New Vista City—the “City on The Hill”—is becoming a reality.  The Consortium has shown remarkable commitment to ensure every detail aligns with their dream of a prosperous modern community.

In the past few days, teams installed four portable dockworks in New Vista Bay, erected temporary housing, and secured the portable harbor to support cargo and passenger transport.

On the work site, landscapers are clearing debris and laying foundations for what will become the beating heart of the metropolis:  a state-of-the-art Business Center designed to attract entrepreneurs and inter-global enterprises.

Surrounding this commercial center, sleek and stylish apartments will house the city’s workforce and their families in comfort with every convenience.

CHAMPIONING SUSTAINABILITY

The Consortium’s environmental stewardship is reflected in all aspects of the endeavor.  Abundant green spaces will create a harmonious balance between urban development and nature.

“Our team members are utilizing eco-friendly materials and integrating renewable energy sources and advanced waste management systems so New Vista City will be a model of sustainability,” said Sergei Krakov, Master Planner of the undertaking.  “This is their city.”

The first task is the installation of floating docks in New Vista Bay to serve as critical access points for supplies, equipment, and personnel.

Next, efforts turn toward erecting temporary housing so the workforce has a safe, comfortable place to stay.  Then landscapers will remove debris and prepare the site for sustainable development.

Last night as Officers Manfredi and Johnson were patrolling the Zoo grounds, they encountered the escaped Orangaroo at Food Warehouse No. 4.  Evidence indicates the Orangaroo broke the door locks with a metal file to gain access to the building.

Officers Manfredi and Johnson entered the main chamber and heard commotion in an adjacent storage room.  They entered the room and discovered several crates had been opened.  The Orangaroo was actively ransacking a box of primate biscuits.

As they approached the creature, the Orangaroo threw bags of sunflower seeds and small vertebrates, forcing them to take cover.

Officers Manfredi and Johnson assumed defensive positions on opposite ends of the aisle to block and subdue the Orangaroo.

The Orangaroo dashed toward the door of the main chamber and Officer Manfredi fired his Consortium-issued tranquillizer gun.  The Orangaroo veered to the side to evade Officer Johnson near the doorway.  The narcotic dart struck Officer Johnson, rendering him unconscious.

The Orangaroo continued into main chamber.  Officer Manfredi radioed for assistance and pursued through the center aisle.  The Orangaroo knocked crates off the shelves, creating obstructions in the aisle which hindered Officer Manfredi’s pursuit.

The Orangaroo continued to the exit and escaped into the Zoo proper.  Officer Manfredi lost sight of the creature near the Apollo Lake and returned to provide aid to Officer Johnson.  Officers Hoffy and Shapiro arrived to provide additional support.

Officer Johnson was transported to the Zoo medical clinic for treatment.  He is expected to make a full recovery when he awakens tomorrow evening.

Professor Denoff was informed of the incident.  Security requested an overhaul of the warehouse doors with level four locking mechanisms.  Maintenance is effecting repairs today.

We have scheduled a meeting this morning at 9:00 am to update and revise the Animal Escape Plan and Escaped Animal Recapture Procedure.

Attendees include Professor Denoff, the General Curator, Incident Commander, Operations Chief/Rescue Coordinator, Senior Ranger, Section Head, Animal Management Supervisors, Animal Section Curators, and the Capture Coordinator.

Last week’s unanimous vote by the Consortium’s City Planner Commission breaks ground on a boondoggle worthy of 19th century robber barons.  Remember how much they cared about the little people they trampled in their quests for riches?

Prepare for a reprise on Blanken 9 when Pankraz Teufel’s “New Frontier” launches Phase 2.

Master Planner Sergei Krakov laid out his scheme for erecting Utopia on the western edge of the continent and his confederates on the commission lapped it up like fine wine.

This sprawling community reeks of grandiose ideas and tenuous restraint on the government contracts bankrolling the build.  Don’t believe me?  Consider the experts.

EarthForce Urban Planners and Architects have pointed to flaws in the city's design, layout, and infrastructure, casting doubts on the long-term sustainability of the place.  It is a black hole with a never-ending one-way stream of goods borrowed from Earth.

Renowned economists at Farkel University are highly skeptical about the project's financial viability and predict cost overruns. The Consortium’s “purification” process doubled in price a week after ignition and is taking longer than estimated, costing more each day.

There are concerns the “business magnets” will create economic inequalities and favor affluent residents.

After the debacles at the Space Center, regulatory authorities question compliance with codes and regulations.  EGA rushed through necessary permits and approvals with minimal assessment.  What was overlooked in the process?

Destruction of natural habitats is happening now—wildlife displacement and ecological degradation.  The “distillation waves” swiped the territory, eradicating countless creatures and vegetation that hadn’t yet been catalogued.

Now the Consortium intends to pave over their blunders.

Labor unions fear for the safety of construction workers laboring in hazardous conditions.  Fair wages and employees’ rights have always been an afterthought with the Consortium.  The majority of workers’ compensation claims have ended with NDA agreements, silencing victims from telling their truth.

It takes two years to travel to Blanken 9. Do we really expect that after Earth has funded these idyllic municipalities the Consortium will deliver them to Earth Government Alliance to manage?  We can’t seize them if they withhold ownership.  We can’t conduct a war that requires two years to reach the battlefield.

Can you imagine the expense of sending 100,000 troops on a two-year journey to a planet that already has more shock troops than we do in the form of cyborgs?  What if the Consortium decides to use these troops to attack us?  Can we withstand 50,000 cyborgs with unique augmentations programmed to kill?

The Consortium’s space fleet was built with Earth money for Consortium transportation.  Earth’s space fleet was built with Consortium technology.  The Consortium will be in a perfect position to subjugate Earth if they so choose.

Earth Government Alliance approved funding for Phase 2 of the “New Frontier” at its last session.

Is this the best allocation of valuable resources?  Materials transported to Blanken 9 are not reciprocated with commensurate materials transported to Earth.  The miracle compound “bellingerine” shipped here goes to the Consortium Medical Center, not the general public.  Consortium surgeons use the metal for one purpose:  making humans into cyborgs to create a stronger workforce to serve the Consortium.

Is this the future you want for your children?

Make your position known.  Write your representatives.  Attend your local government town halls.  Tell your legislators you want the millions spent on this vanity debacle reallocated to make life better on Earth.

It’s the human thing to do.

It has come to my attention that there are narratives circulating within the company that the purification process currently underway:

“may disrupt a vital role in maintaining soil health and supporting the broader ecosystem.”

“is altering environmental conditions in unanticipated ways.”

“may cause transformations in the ecosystem that are difficult to reverse.”

These reports place our initiative at risk for catastrophe at the point of construction and here on Earth.  This will result in negative repercussions.

While Dr. Zimmerman holds high value for the Consortium, his ominous prognostications cast an aura of inevitable demise.  As a renowned biologist, he commands influence among the lower ranks of employees and may impact their opinion of the overall project.

I am aware of a previous instance where Dr. Zimmerman interacted with a journalist expressing his concerns outside the organizational hierarchy.

We do not want this to repeat.

To alleviate these risks, I recommend the following actions:

1. Enhanced Monitoring: Implement a comprehensive method to track Dr. Zimmerman’s communications and interactions with co-workers.

2. Independent Assessments: Appoint security guardians to assist Dr. Zimmerman as necessary and restrict his access to unauthorized personnel.

3. Adaptive Management: Develop detailed strategies to respond to information leaked to outside entities.

4. Contingency Plans: Establish procedures to address contrary outcomes that arise from Dr. Zimmerman’s actions deemed detrimental to the Consortium.

Species:  Desert Squirrel (Sciurus desertus)

Habitat:

The Desert Squirrel inhabits the arid regions of the Sector 7 Desert, a harsh environment with scorching daytime temperatures, cool nights, and sparse vegetation.  The landscape contains hardy cacti (Cactaceae xerophila) and resilient shrubs (Artemisia arida).

Physical Description:

The Desert Squirrel is approximately 25 cm in length, with a bushy tail that extends an additional 20 cm. Its beige color provides excellent camouflage against the desert sands.  Its short, dense fur insulates the squirrel from extreme temperatures.

The Desert Squirrel has large eyes adapted for low-light vision, allowing him to be active during dawn and dusk when temperatures are moderate.  The ears are small and rounded.

Behavior:

Foraging: The Desert Squirrel feeds on seeds and nuts.  It extracts moisture from its food, reducing its dependence on scarce water sources.  The squirrel uses its sharp claws to dig for buried seeds.

Communication:  The Desert Squirrel communicates with other members of its species via chirps and trills.  It flicks its tail rapidly to signal danger.  It flicks its tail slowly to indicate curiosity.

Nesting:  The Desert Squirrel constructs nests in burrows dug into the sandy soil for protection from predators and extreme temperatures.  It lines the burrows with plant material for insulation.

Grooming:

The Desert Squirrel removes parasites and excess oils from its fur by “sand bathing” (rolling in sand).

Reproduction:

Breeding occurs once a year, with a gestation period of approximately 30 days.  Females give birth to litters of 2-4 offspring, which are born with a thin layer of fur and closed eyes.  The young are weaned after 4 weeks and reach maturity at 4 months.

Predators and Threats:

Natural predators include the Desert Hawk (Accipiter desertus) and the Sand Viper (Vipera arenaria).  The Desert Squirrel utilizes camouflage and agility to evade these threats.

Additional Notes:

Further research is needed to understand the full extent of the Desert Squirrel’s adaptations to its harsh environment and its interactions with other desert species.

Subject:  P. Macropus Pygaeus (Orangaroos)

Last evening as Officers Manfredi and Johnson were patrolling the perimeter of the Orangaroo enclosure, they discovered a new escape route through the concrete and wire barrier.  Evidence suggests the Orangaroos hacked through the fencing with some type of metal rod.

The rampage path led to the outer brick wall barrier surrounding the enclosure. Evidence suggests the animals leaped the wall and escaped into the Zoo proper.

The bad news is the animals have not been found on the premises.  The good news is the new high-security puck lock on the gate remains intact and does not require replacement.

Officers Hoffy and Shapiro have been issued tranquillizer darts for use when the animals are located.

Any news on the level three overhaul for the enclosure?  Additional staff is not sufficient.
