HAPPY NATIONAL MONTE CRISTO DAY!

HAPPY NATIONAL MONTE CRISTO DAY!
The Full Monte Cristo Sandwich.

On September 17 we celebrate the fabulous Monte Cristo sandwich!

Dan considers the sandwich a cradle of energy and protein and the Monte Cristo (aka French Sandwich, Toasted Ham Sandwich, French Toasted Cheese Sandwich) delivers both.

A deep-fried egg-dipped ham and cheese sandwich, the Monte Cristo is an American variation of the French Croque Monsieur sandwich first served in Paris in the 1910s.

Recipes for the Monte Cristo appeared in American cookbooks in the 1930s. The sandwich was first served in southern California in the 1950s.

In 1966 the Monte Cristo Sandwich joined the menu at the Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleans’s Square in Disneyland. Its popularity soared.

Today the Monte Cristo sandwich is highly popular.  Many restaurants feature their own version of the sandwich, and there are many different recipes.

Dan likes to dust powdered sugar over his Monte Cristo and have raspberry jam on the side.
